Following high expectations of his first outing at the Nigeria-Tanzania match which ended goalless this past weekend, newly appointed Coach of the Super Eagles Sunday Oliseh says he is not a magician and that patience will be needed to achieve the desired results from the Super Eagles.

He said this at a press conference at Hotel Presidential, Port Harcourt ahead of Tuesday’s friendly with the Mena of Niger Republic.

“I have said it over and over that I am no magician. We have to come to accept the hard fact that we are not right there at the top, at the moment. No doubt, we have potential, and based on the unity I have seen amongst the players, and the willingness to work hard and accomplish, we will get back to the top in good time. We are building a new team, and patience is required. It is like starting from the scratch, because the fact is that we didn’t qualify for the last Africa Cup of Nations. However, I have the confidence that this group will make Nigeria proud again.”he said

Nigeria football officials have made an
appeal to Liverpool winger Jordon Ibe to switch international allegiance
to the Super Eagles with new coach Sunday Oliseh travelling to Melwood
to meet the player. The Guardian of London and the Liverpool ECHO published reports of the meeting.

Ibe joined Liverpool after making his
debut for Wycombe Wanderers at the age of 15 and last season he broke
into Brendan Rodgers’ senior side after impressing on loan at Derby
County.

Bermondsey-born Ibe has represented
England at under-18, 19 and 20 levels but is eligible to play for
Nigeria as his dad David is from Nigeria. Oliseh has also met separately
with Victor Moses and other Nigerians in England.

However, the British media suggest that
while being flattered by the meeting with Oliseh and Nigeria’s desire to
get him on board, Ibe is still hoping to launch an international career
with England. Oliseh, on his part, has made it clear that he wants Ibe
to switch.

He spoke to Ibe personally at Melwood to
outline his ideas for the national team and it will be interesting to
see whether or not he is successful.

The Guardian’s report does add
that the FA are now considering bringing Ibe’s England debut forward in
order to ensure he doesn’t switch to Nigeria.

The Liverpool striker is expected to be
named in Gareth Southgate’s England U-21 squad for next month’s matches
against USA and Norway.

He could still change his mind until he
has played a competitive fixture for the senior side but considering his
progress with Liverpool it’s unlikely to be long before Roy Hodgson
calls upon him.

Ibe has been Liverpool’s standout
performer in pre-season and is expected to start in Sunday’s Premier
League opener at Stoke City.

super Eagles coach Sunday Oliseh has
proposed a squad of 18 overseas-based professionals and five players
from the domestic league for next month’s Africa Cup of Nations
qualifier in Tanzania.

However, there are suggestions that
Oliseh should accommodate more players from the league for the match
against the Taifa Stars.

“Oliseh wants to list 18 professionals
from overseas for the match in Tanzania, while five places will be left
for the players in the local league. But some officials have asked that
he increases the number of the players from the league,” a top official
informed AfricanFootball.com.

The Nigeria Football Federation’s Technical Committee Chairman, Chief Felix Anyasi-Agwu, told The PUNCH that the list of the players in the Nigerian league has already been cleared for the coach.

He said, “The list of those coming in
from Europe or elsewhere has not been submitted to us and there’s no
problem with that. He is still working and talking with the players he
wants and he needs the time to get the right people.

“What has been dealt with is the squad
coming in from the domestic league and that had to be settled first,
obviously because they are resuming first and that had to be taken care
of first. They are getting into camp by August 17. It is not about a few
of them but a full team because they have to critically look at the
players and pick exactly those they want with regard to the level of the
competition. And so everything is working out well.”

Oliseh and his assistants will trim the squad down to the number they want for Dar es Salaam.

The overseas-based pros are expected to
fly directly to Tanzania, where they will join up with the coaches and
the players from the league.

The new Eagles coach has maintained that
Nigeria must beat Tanzania in Dar es Salaam to raise hopes of
qualifying for the 2017 finals holding in Gabon.

He said, “It is going to be very, very
difficult, but I believe we can qualify. All we have to do is look at
ourselves, try to improve our game and hopefully we will qualify.”

Nigeria won the opening game against
Chad 2-0 in the qualifying series. Rivals Egypt are leading Nigeria in
the group by goals difference. Nigeria under Stephen Keshi failed to
qualify for the 2015 edition held in Equatorial Guinea.

Sunshine Stars on Thursday defeated Sharks 2-0 to return to the summit of the Nigeria Professional Football League.

Goals from Prince Aggreh in the 10th
minute and Tunde Adeniji in the 68th minute gave the Akure Gunners the
maximum points to return to the top of the table.

The win opened up a one-point lead
between Sunshine and Enyimba, who had been at the top since their 1-1
draw against Rangers on Sunday and also their 2-2 draw against Akwa
United on Wednesday. Sunshine now have 39 points while the Peoples
Elephant have 38 points from 21 matches.

Sunshine, who were beaten 1-0 on Sunday
by FC Taraba, lived up to their pre-match hype of aiming to win the game
as they started the brighter of the two sides. Sunshine attacked first
when Aggreh sent a shot, which did little to threaten Henry Ayodele in
goal for Sharks.

The visitors responded but the hosts
took the lead in the 10th minute when Aggreh broke the deadlock. The
goal led to a domination of the match by the hosts as they went closer
to double their lead.

Sharks sought an equaliser but the
closest they went was in the 36th minute when they failed to score
despite a goal-mouth scramble in the Sunshine area.

The second half saw the hosts pick up from where they left as Aggreh and Adeniji troubled Ayodele in the Sharks goal.

Their efforts paid off in the 68th minute when Adeniji doubled the lead with a well-worked team goal.

The hosts continued to attack while the
closest the visitors went was a free kick in the 87th minute which was
saved by Ikechukwu Ezenwa in Sunshine goal.

I am ready to buy Arsenal at ‘whatever price’ — Dangote

Nigerian billionaire Aliko Dangote insists that soon he will have ‘enough time and enough resources’ to buy Arsenal football club, whatever the price.

Dangote, 58, is Africa’s richest man having amassed a fortune in the region of $18.4 billion (£12.2 billion). He is currently the 67th richest man in the world.

He first spoke of his interest in purchasing the Gunners last month when he admitted that ‘one day’ he hoped to buy the club, adding that he ‘already knew’ his strategy to take them forward.

That day may arrive sooner than first expected, with Dangote telling the BBC Tuesday that completion of his proposed oil refinery in Nigeria will provide the funds necessary to launch a takeover of the club.

“When we get this refinery on track, I will have enough time and enough resources to pay what they are asking for,” he told BBC Hausa.

“There were a couple of us who were rushing to buy, and we thought with the prices then, the people who were interested in selling were trying to go for a kill,” Dangote continued.

“We backtracked, because we were very busy doing other things, especially our industrialisation.”

“They are doing well, but they need another strategic direction,” he added.

“They need more direction than the current situation, where they just develop players and sell them.
Stan Kroenke is Arsenal’s majority shareholder, with the American owning 66.64% of the club’s parent company, Arsenal Holdings plc.

Keshi: Eagles will topple Egypt

Super Eagles coach Stephen Keshi has tipped his side to overtake Egypt when the next round of games are played in the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign. Eagles had on Saturday shot to the summit of Group G but their temporary leadership lasted for about 24 hours after Egypt whipped Tanzania Cairo 3-0 in Cairo to now occupy the top position.

Like the Eagles, who defeated Chad 2-0, Egypt had to wait till the second half to grind out a 3-0 win against Tanzania, with all the goals coming within a spate of nine minutes. Rami Rabia broke the deadlock in the 61st minute and barely four minutes later, Basem Morsi added the second goal with Fiorentina forward, Mohammed Salah netting the the third in the 70th minute of the encounter.

With three points and three goals, Egypt have the same three points with Nigeria but lead on superior goals difference. The next round of qualifiers comes up in September with Nigeria travelling to Dar es Salaam to battle Tanzania while Egypt face a difficult trip to N’Djamena against Chad.

With the top team in each group qualifying for the tournament due to be hosted by Gabon, Keshi has maintained his confidence in his charges ability to topple Egypt from the summit of Group G.

Speaking in a radio interview, Keshi said “this is just the beginning of the qualifying campaign and I am happy that we started with a win.

The last time we were involved in an opening AFCON qualifying match was against Congo last year and we all remember that it did not end well for us. “But now, we have started with a win and I believe that even though the Egyptians are leading us that we can overtake them after the next were involved in an opening AFCON qualifying match was against Congo last year and we all remember that it did not end well for us.

“But now, we have started with a win and I believe that even though the Egyptians are leading us that we can overtake them after the next matches are played. I know that football is not arithmetic but if we put our house in order and play with determination that we can be the ones setting the pace for others in the group”, added the former AFCON winner and African coach of the year.
Serbia beat 10-man Mali, to face Brazil in final

Ivan Saponjic scored a dramatic extra-time winner as Serbia beat Mali 2-1 at Auckland’s North Harbour Stadium to set up a FIFA U-20 World Cup final with Brazil. Not for the first time at New Zealand 2015, the substitute was the Europeans’ hero, with his goal settling an enthralling and evenly contested match that had earlier been punctuated by strikes from Andrija Zivkovic and Youssouf Kone, with the latter receiving a red card in extra time.

Serbia were returning to the scene of their quarter-final win over USA and, having ended that game on a high, they begun this one the same way. It took just four minutes, in fact, for them to take a deserved early lead, with Andrija Zivkovic the scorer. The lively No11 was allowed time and space to run through on goal and pick his spot with a low left-footed shot into the corner after Souleymane Coulibaly had failed in his attempts to cut out Nemanja Maksimovic’s threaded through pass.

Ahead and on top, Serbia looked to reinforce their advantage and should have gone two in front nine minutes later. But having been caught out for the goal, Coulibaly was able to come to Mali’s rescue, clearing off the line with his keeper stranded after Stanisa Mandic had cut the ball back for Sergei Milinkovic to strike at goal.

The Africans were living dangerously at this stage and on 21 minutes had another near escape. Serbia again cut through their ranks easily, with Andrija Zivkovic and Malin Gajic combining well on the right to set up Stanisa Mandic. But while the latter’s low cross found Serbia’s No9 just five yards out, his touch was too faint and the ball flicked off his right boot and wide of the far post.

At this stage, it looked to be only a matter of time before Mali fell further behind. However, as the half wore on, their nerve steadied and they began to create some openings of their own. No-one, though, could have envisaged them levelling matters in the spectacular style they did.

The goal came out of nothing, with Youssouf Kone gathering possession in an unthreatening position on the left, over 30 yards from goal, and stunning everyone – not least keeper Predrag Rajkovic – with a ferociously struck left-foot shot that skidded into the bottom-right corner.

If there any were question marks about Rajkovic’s reactions for the goal – however good the strike was – he reaffirmed his worth a couple of minutes later. Souleymane Diarra had jinked in from the left and fired in a shot that was heading for the roof of the net until the Serbia keeper reacted instinctively, sticking out a hand to brilliantly tip over.

Mali, having been hanging on, suddenly looked the more likely winners. This continued at the start of the second half, with Diadie Samassekou playing in Diedonne Gbakle only for the latter to hesitate at the crucial moment, allowing Rajkovic to narrow the angle and block from his weakly struck shot.

Serbia were struggling at the other end but, with 18 minutes remaining, a moment of pure inspiration nearly settled the game in their favour. Milan Gajic was the player who supplied it, controlling a dropping ball on his instep 30 yards from goal and crashing in a superb dipping volley. Sadly for the midfielder, the ball bounced down off the crossbar and landed a couple of centimetres in front of the line.

That left extra time to settle the outcome, and Saponjic to steal the headlines. The forward had come off the bench to become Serbia’s hero in the last 16 against Hungary and he was their super sub again, scoring the goal that took his team through to a historic final. Zivkovic once more played his part with a flighted corner and when Milos Veljkovic rose highest to knock the ball back across goal, Saponjic was on hand to nod the ball home.

Mali rarely looked like battling back thereafter and their cause was further hampered with eight minutes of extra time remaining when goalscorer Kone received a second yellow card. He will now miss the third-place play-off against Senegal, while Serbia can lo

Chelsea 1-1 Manchester City: Silva salvages a point for the champions

Manuel Pellegrini had the Spaniard to thank for pulling his side back into it after cancelling out Loic Remy's opener as Frank Lampard made an emotional return to Stamford Bridge

Champions Manchester City failed to make inroads into Chelsea's five-point lead as the Premier League's top two shared an absorbing 1-1 draw.

Jose Mourinho continued his tempestuous relationship with the media by shunning a pre-match interview with Sky Sports – apparently angered by both a £25,000 fine for comments about referees and Diego Costa's retrospective ban for a stamp on Emre Can during the League Cup semi-final second leg this week.

That indiscretion earned the Spain striker a three-match suspension, but the man to benefit from Costa's absence - recalled striker Loic Remy - took centre stage at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.

He gave the hosts a 41st-minute lead, before a rare mistake from Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois allowed David Silva to equalise in the final minute of the first half.

Although Manuel Pellegrini's team controlled much of the second period, their winless league run extended to three matches.

City overhauled deficits in late runs to the Premier League crown in 2012 and 2014, and a similar effort may now be required, as Mourinho’s men remain in the driving seat with 15 games remaining.

Aside from Costa's absence, Ramires came into the Chelsea midfield as Cesc Fabregas missed out with hamstring injury, while Bacary Sagna was a surprise inclusion at right-back ahead of Pablo Zabaleta for Manchester City.

The visitors started sharply, as Courtois beat away a stinging shot from Jesus Navas inside the first 20 seconds and Fernandinho had a low, angled drive deflected wide.

James Milner was alert to disposes Chelsea right-back Branislav Ivanovic in the 24th minute and play the ball into Sergio Aguero, but Kurt Zouma forced City's top scorer to shoot from an acute angle and Courtois saved comfortably.

Courtois' opposite number, Joe Hart, made his first save of the match from an Oscar effort after an error by Vincent Kompany let Remy escape down the left flank.

John Terry then joined fellow captain Kompany in having an error go unpunished - Aguero pulling a shot wastefully wide after the former England man had missed his kick from a 32nd-minute punt down field.

That was a chance the Argentina striker would regret 10 minutes later, as Eden Hazard brilliantly steered Ivanovic's flighted pass back across goal for Remy to convert.

City's response was immediate, as Courtois fumbled a searching Navas cross, Aguero smashed the loose ball back towards goal and Silva prodded home.

Frank Lampard enjoyed warm applause on his return to Stamford Bridge while warming up with the City substitutes, as his colleagues on the field enjoyed an encouraging start the second half.

Silva and Navas combined on the right flank for Fernandinho to plant a header into the turf - Courtois turning the bouncing ball over.

Milner then looped a headed attempt onto the roof of the net, the impressive Navas again supplying the ammunition, and City's control increased as Chelsea's midweek League Cup exertions began to tell.

Lampard finally made a 76th-minute introduction as City attempted a late assault.

However, with Mourinho increasingly animated on the touchline, his side displayed steely resilience in keeping with their manager’s siege mentality, as they closed out what could prove a vital point in the title race.
