The captain of an easyJet flight to Crete was taken ill

AN easyJet holiday plane packed with Brits had to make an emergency landing today after the captain lost consciousness.

The co-pilot “activated emergency procedures” when his colleague fell ill on a flight from Gatwick to Heraklion in Crete.

Flight 5461 was diverted to Marco Polo airport near Venice, Italy, where it made a safe landing and the passengers were unloaded.

The captain was was taken to hospital where his condition is reported to be in non-life threatening.

The drama came four days after the captain of an American Airlines flight died at the controls during a flight from Phoenix to Boston.

It was safely landed by the co-pilot.
