Prepaid metersThe report in The PUNCH on Tuesday, October 6, 2015, that the authorities of Ikeja Electric are planning to install 10,000 meters for their customers with effect from this month made an interesting reading.

But if previous failed plans are anything to go by, the best response to this latest promise for customers is guided cynicism and a “siddon look” posturing.

On many occasions before this latest promise, spanning over a year now, I have enquired from the Oshodi Business Unit of Ikeja Electric how to get a prepaid meter for my flat all to no avail. Instead of providing me with a prepaid meter as needed, all it has been sending me are outrageous and provocative electricity bills, month after month, culminating in the N10,000 it gave to each flat in my building this month. The reason being that because we do not have meters, we should be condemned to estimated bills. Yet, it has not been forthcoming in providing willing customers prepaid meters.

Now that it has promised yet again to install prepaid meters to its customers, may I use this veritable medium to make a public appeal to Ikeja Electric to make it available to my building and desist from terrorising me monthly with estimated crazy bills.
