Senegal on Saturday won their 11th African title and qualified for the Rio 2016 Olympics after beating hosts Cameroon 81-66 in a thrilling AfroBasket Women 2015 final in Yaoundé.
Nigeria’s D’Tigresses defeated Angola 65-55 to finish third, grabbing the last available ticket for the FIBA Women’s Olympic Qualifying Tournament holding next year. They will play alongside Cameroon in the tournament.
Angola had beaten Nigeria at the group stage but could not repeat the magic on Saturday. It was the first time Angola would finish outside the top three since 2005.
Joyce Ekworomadu pushed D’Tigresses to the win with a team-high 15 points, while Sonia Guadalupe hit three-pointers to lead Angola with 13 points.
Nigeria trailed 55-45 heading to the final quarter, but kept Angola scoreless for the entire quarter as they finished on the podium for the first time since winning the tournament as hosts in 2005.
Senegal’s shooting guard Aya Traore went home with the Most Valuable Player award after a brilliant performance which saw her finished the game with 16 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals.
Adaora Elonu, who had 10 points in Saturday’s game, was voted as the only Nigerian in the All-Star Five, which also included Senegal’s Traore, Cameroon’s Ramses Lonlack, Geraldine Robert of Gabon and Deolinda Ngulela of Mozambique.
