OFTEN we're told that fruit and vegetables are good for us but shockingly some of them can actually make you gain weight.
We look at five fruit and vegetables that have a lot more calories than you’d expect and uncover the real reason they’re making you fat.
Take a look at the contenders... you might be surprised.
1. Banana chips
You’ve probably seen the rise in the popularity of banana chips; they've even featured in Naturally Ella.
However, if you pick up a bag from the supermarket they can have up to 519kcal per (145g) cup... not so healthy now.
The delicious snacks also contain 35g of sugar in each cup, that’s more than a can of cola.
2. Raisins
Lunchbox favourite, dried raisins, these have been popular for decades.
But snacking on these sweet, shrivelled grapes can be very fattening; a (145g) cup can contain up to 434kcal.
The sweet treats also have an enormous sugar count of 86g per cup, that’s more than a bar of chocolate.
3. Avocado
Another superfood, avocados are often found in healthy salads because they are packed full of nutrients.
But a (145g) cup of diced avocados can actually contain up to 240kcals.
Shockingly, the supposed healthy food actually has a high amount of fat, which totals a massive 22g, that's more than a cheeseburger.
4. Sweet corn
Sweet corn is different from other corns as its harvested early, in the milk stage, and the kernels are eaten as vegetables.
But these starchy vegetables can contain up to 153kcals for every (145g) cup.
The surprising fact about sweet corn is that a cup of corn kernel can contain up to 34g of carbohydrates, almost the same as a (145g) cup of pasta.
5. Potatoes
So many classic dishes involve potatoes - from Sunday roasts to pie and mash, potatoes are a much-loved veg.
Although they don’t have a particularly high calorie count; a cup (145g) has around 130kcals.
Potatoes do have a high glycemic load and high glycemic index, which according to research means that you don’t feel full after eating them.
