Tragic 'cyclops' baby born with just one eye in middle of forehead
A TRAGIC picture of a baby born with only one eye in the middle of his forehead and no nose has drawn comparisons with the mythical cyclops after it went viral on social media.
The baby is believed to be suffering from cyclopia (also known as cyclocephaly or synophthalmia) which is one of the rarest forms of birth defects, and children born with this condition often die within moments of birth.
The single eye is a result of the boy's eye sockets not forming correctly in the womb.
According to reports from the Saudi Arabian news website slaati.com, doctors think the deformity could be the result of a combination of medicines taken by the mother or from exposure to radiation.
The mum, who is Egyptian, gave birth at a private hospital in the north-eastern town of El Senbellawein.
Dr Ahmed Badruddin, who is supervising the baby’s condition at the hospital, says that the infant has a full head of hair, large ears and many other deformities on his body.
A heartbreaking picture of the child has been released by the family, who are receiving counselling.
Dr Ahmed Badruddin said due to the infant’s condition, he is only expected to survive a few more days.
