The President of Nigeria Union in South Africa, Mr Ikechukwu Anyene, says the group will protect the interests of Nigerians resident in that country.

Anyene said this on Sunday in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN)in Rustenburg, North West Province of South Africa.

He spoke on the sidelines of a ceremony to mark Nigeria`s 55th independence anniversary organised by the union.

Anyene said that the union had liaised with the Nigerian Mission in South Africa to make the process of renewing or obtaining new passports less cumbersome.

He said the union had pleaded with the mission to capture the details of Nigerians in their locations.

Anyene also urged Nigerians in that country to get the identity card recently launched by the Union for easy identification in South Africa.

Anyene also urged them to register for the Bank Verification Number at a centre set up by the Nigeria Consulate in Johannesburg in order to meet the Oct. 31 deadline of the Central Bank of Nigeria.

According to him, the union inaugurated a monthly magazine to publicise the activities of Nigerians in South Africa.

” The Nairand news is used to tell our own stories from our own point of view as it affects our people in South Africa,” he said.

The Ward Chairman of the union in Rustenburg, Mr Chicaodili Nwanedo, also said Nigerians were aware of the challenges facing the nation while celebrating the Independence Day.

” Though we are abroad, we will not forget our heritage. Nigeria is known for her rich cultural heritage,” he said.

Nwanedo urged Nigerians resident in Rustenburg to be law abiding and respect the laws of their host country.

The founder of Wives of Nigerians in Southern Africa, Mrs Anne Ozokoye, urged women to join the body to foster unity among members.

She said the women were prepared to play positive roles in integrating Nigerian women into their host community.

Ozokoye urged the union to consider women for elective positions as a way of giving them a sense of belonging and improving cordial relations with Nigerians at home.
