Heartland on Sunday defeated 10-man Enyimba 2-1 to reduce the People’s Elephant’s lead at the summit of the Nigeria Premier League table.
Goals from Fortune Omoniwari and Emeka Ogbugh gave the Owerri side the three points in the Oriental derby. Markson Ojobo got the consolation goal for Enyimba from the penalty spot.
Despite the loss, Enyimba still lead the table on 58 points, while Warri Wolves moved to second place with 55 points after their 3-0 victory over Sunshine Stars on Saturday. Sunshine are third with 53 points.
Enyimba began the match the brighter of the two sides as they sought to extend their lead in the league.
They however suffered a setback in the 38th minute when Ifeanyi Anaemena was red-carded for a second bookable offence. Heartland got their first goal two minutes later from a free-kick converted by Omoniwari.
But Enyimba equalised in the added time of the first half through Ojobo after a penalty was awarded to the Aba side. Ogbugh ensured the hosts got the three points in the 61st minute when he scored from a difficult angle.
