FRENCH train attack hero Spencer Stone was stabbed four times in the chest early on Thursday while trying to protect a friend on the streets of his US hometown.

The attack was so violent that police did not think he would survive when they arrived on the scene in Sacramento, California, shortly after 12:45am local time.

But the 25-year-old US airman appeared to cheat death again and was last night described as “stable”.

The Air Force said in a statement: “He is alive and in stable condition at this time. We do not have any information as to the events preceding the incident.

“A1C Spencer Stone has been transported to a local hospital, and is currently being treated for injury.

“The incident is currently under investigation by local law enforcement.”

The attack took place near a popular strip of bars in the California town.

A US defence source said he was protecting a pal.

The gunman was grabbed by the unarmed Stone and his US Marine pal as he came out of a toilet brandishing a Kalashnikov.
They had been standing nearby and heard him cocking the gun.
