EVERY day this week we're bringing you one of the world's creepiest unsolved mysteries

Elisa Lam's death remains one of the world's biggest unsolved mysteries
Canadian student Elisa Lam was travelling the West Coast of America when she disappeared on January 31, 2013.

Her parents alerted LAPD after they didn’t receive the usual daily phone call from their daughter, behaviour they described as very unusual.

Elisa was due to check out of the Cecil Hotel in Los Angeles that day, a location notorious for murders, suicides and paranormal activity.

Public interest in her disappearance began to rise two weeks later when police released CCTV footage of
Elisa acting erratically the day she disappeared.

The 21-year-old can be seen exiting and re-entering a lift, which doesn’t appear to work, talking and gesturing manically in the hallways outside and seemingly hiding in the elevator, although nobody else can be seen.

Nineteen days later, hotel staff checked the water tank on the alarmed, secured rooftop after receiving complaints about strange tasting, black water and found Elisa’s partly decomposed, naked body floating alongside her clothes and possessions.

In the video Elisa looks as though she could be under the influence of drugs, but no alcohol or substances were found in her system during the autopsy.

Some have suggested her death could have come after a bipolar episode, a condition she suffered from.

Police ruled her death accidental, but this explanation has not been satisfactory for followers of the case.

Many have argued it would have been impossible for Elisa to get inside the tank, which was kept under very secure measures, and close the heavy lid on herself.

Some have also argued the CCTV has been tampered with as the timestamp is obscured, parts are slowed down and nearly a minute has been removed mid-video.

The case eerily echoes the plot of 2005 horror movie Dark Water, which documents the death of a woman whose body is found in a hotel water tank after guests complain about black water.

In a sinister twist Elisa’s blog continued to update for months after her death and her phone was never found.
Suggestions as to the cause of the mystery range from murder to a paranormal attack, but police have carried out no further investigations.
